New Delhi, India (March 19, 2024)—The Indian government today unveiled a revised national policy on artificial intelligence aimed at fostering innovation while ensuring robust safeguards for citizens. The updated framework emphasizes transparency, ethical practices, and public oversight in developing and deploying AI systems across various sectors.
"AI's transformative potential is immense, but it must be harnessed responsibly," stated Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology. Our new policy prioritizes openness, accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights as we drive AI-led growth and technological advancement."
A key pillar of the revised policy requires AI developers and deployers to adhere to stringent transparency guidelines. Companies must disclose key aspects of their AI models, including the training data used, the core algorithms employed, and the intended applications. This transparency is intended to enable meaningful audits, facilitate public trust, and mitigate risks associated with opaque "black box" AI systems.
The policy also establishes a robust governance framework overseen by a newly created National AI Authority. This independent body will evaluate AI applications for potential risks, develop sector-specific guidelines, and investigate instances of AI system failures or misuse. Importantly, the authority will be able to impose penalties and revoke authorizations for AI deployments that violate established norms or infringe upon citizen rights.
"We recognize that AI is a double-edged sword," remarked Dr. Anjali Krishnan, a leading AI ethicist who consulted on the policy revisions. "While it offers immense benefits, unchecked AI development could lead to concerning outcomes like algorithmic bias, privacy violations, and even existential risks. This balanced policy fosters innovation while implementing crucial guardrails."
The revised policy has garnered praise from industry leaders, who view it as a pragmatic approach that provides a clear roadmap for responsible AI development without stifling innovation. Human rights advocates have also emphasised citizen protection and public oversight.
As India positions itself as a global AI powerhouse, this updated policy signals the nation's commitment to ensuring that the AI revolution unfolds ethically, transparently, and accountable, safeguarding both the public interest and individual rights.
