Synopsis of the Talk:
Black holes are the most extreme environments in nature, where the force of gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape. Since we observe the rest of the Universe through light, black holes must be directly unobservable. Theories of stellar evolution predict that black holes of various masses must be everywhere in the Universe. In the last decade, direct evidence of black holes have been found in many ways. There has been a long tradition in India in the last century of theoretical research on gravity and on black holes. In recent times direct evidence of black holes have been found in several ways. Last year's Nobel prize in Physics was awarded for first steps towards understanding black holes, and for detecting and characterising the supermassive black hole at the core of our Galaxy.
The webinar will discuss these, and explore the connection with past, present and future research and technological opportunities in India.
