Plans submitted for plastics to the hydrogen plant

Peel Environmental has submitted a planning application to Cheshire West and Chester Council for waste plastic to hydrogen facility at the company’s 54-ha Protos site near Ellesmere Port.

Run in partnership with Waste2Tricity, it is intended that the £7m plant will use advanced thermal treatment technology, developed by the PowerHouse Energy Group at the nearby Thornton Science Park. It will take up to 35 tonnes of unrecyclable plastics a day to create a local source of hydrogen which could be used to power road vehicles. The facility would also generate electricity provided to commercial users via a microgrid.

The Protos site sits within the Energy Innovation District (EID), which is run by the Cheshire Energy Hub. The energy hub is a partnership of the Cheshire & Warrington LEP, Cheshire West and Chester Council and the University of Chester. It is hoped that development will lead to 14 full-time jobs, with more than 100 jobs during construction. Myles Kitcher from Peel Environmental said that using waste plastic to generate hydrogen could help reduce reliance on landfills, improve air quality and provide a low-cost fuel.
