  • PM Naredra Modi to address 6 virtual rallies in Punjab

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned six virtual Punjab election rallies for Prime Minister Naredra Modi, which he will address from Delhi. The first is on February 8 for Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib parliamentary constituencies, while the second is on February 9 for Patiala and Amritsar.

Earlier, the virtual rally for Patiala and Ferozepur was to be on February 9 but the party swapped Ferozepur with Amritsar. Each parliamentary constituency includes nine assembly segments. Punjab BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma said: "The party will install two giant screens in each assembly constituency and follow the Covid protocol. Since the election commission has relaxed the restrictions on crowd size from 1,000 for open grounds, the PM might like to address a physical rally after the first two online events."

The party will take a decision on the physical rally in a day or two. Union home minister Amit Shah is also among the BJP’s star campaigners in Punjab but his programme is yet to be finalised. Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Hardeep Singh Puri, besides the other BJP MPs, are on with campaigning already.

The February 8 rally will go up on 18 live screens in six Ludhiana urban constituencies, along with some rural areas. The district BJP will install LED screens for the event but since the Covid protocol doesn’t allow a large gathering, the sites could be altered. District BJP president Pushpinder Singhal said: "We received the schedule on Saturday night. The PM’s rally will boost our election campaign. It’ll be a new experience for the general public. It’s online event but public’s involvement is also necessary."

The district administration has asked the returning officers to mark the campaign sites that can hold 500 to 1,000 people. The Election Commission of India has passed instructions for proper security of star campaigners. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ motorcase was blocked at the Piareana village flyover for 20 minutes on January 5 during his last vistir to Punjab to address an election rally in Ferozepur.
