    NEW DELHI:-

    This is big even by the standards of the murky world of kickbacks in defence deals. CBI has claimed that its investigations into defence scams have brought out the involvement of former Navy chief, Admiral (retd) S M Nanda. "We have come across evidence showing that Admiral Nanda worked as a broker both in the German HDW submarine deal and the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov contract," said a CBI official.

    Allegations of 7% kickback in the Rs 420 crore deal for four HDW submarines from Germany in the mid-1980s have long been doing the rounds. But this is the first time CBI is claiming kickbacks in the yet-to-be-realised $1.5 billion package deal signed in January 2004 for the decommissioned Admiral Gorshkov, along with 16 MiG-29K 'Fulcrum' fighters and Kamov copters to operate from it.
