    There is tension in Uttar Pradesh after two people were killed in police firing in Safai, the hometown of Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

    Three people were also injured in what the Samajwadi Party claims, was unprovoked police firing on protesters at Mayawati's orders.

    Mulayam Singh Yadav's brother Shivpal Yadav and son Akhilesh have courted arrest to register protest at the treatment meted out to them. Both of them, along with dozens of other Samajwadi workers, have been taken to the police lines for now. The administration is yet to decide whether to put them in jail or not.

    In Lucknow, the police had to use water cannons and teargas to disperse the crowds.
