For the very first time in Assam’s history, a non-Congress government has returned to power following the 2021 Assembly election. In the 126-member house, the ruling BJP-led alliance easily went past the halfway mark of 64. In 2016, the alliance, which also included Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), had won 86 seats—BJP, 60; AGP, 14; and BPF, 12. And while the BPF deserted the alliance this time, the alliance found a new partner in the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). Together, they have won 74 seats.
