  • Delhi logs record 395 deaths

MHA issues guidelines for containment measures

Coronavirus India Live Updates: Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech on Thursday announced that Covaxin will be available to state governments at a price of Rs 400 per dose.

Coronavirus India Live Updates: The national capital on Thursday recorded 395 deaths due to coronavirus, the highest since the pandemic began a year ago, and 24,235 cases with a positivity rate of 32.82 per cent, according to a bulletin issued by the city health department. This was the eighth day in a row that Delhi has recorded over 300 deaths due to COVID-19. The cumulative case count in the city stands at 11,22,286, of which over 10.08 lakh have recovered. The death toll due to the viral disease stands at 15,772.

The Centre on Thursday directed the states and Union territories to go for intensive local containment measures in the districts that have high number of COVID-19 cases to curb the spread of the viral disease. In the fresh guidelines issued May, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), however, did not mention about the imposition of a lockdown anywhere.

Maharashtra government on Thursday extended the restrictions put in place to arrest the spread of Covid-19 till May 15. In an order released by the state, it said: “The Disaster Management Act, 2005, finds it is necessary to continue the enforcement of the current restrictions throughout the state beyond 7 AM on 1st May, 2021 till 7 AM on 15th May, 2021 to break the chain of transmission effectively.”

In a major development, Bharat Biotech today announced that Covaxin will be available to state governments at a price of Rs 400 per dose. The firm, which had earlier pegged the price of the vaccine at Rs 600 per dose for state governments, said in a statement: “Recognising the enormous challenges to the public health care system, we have made Covaxin available to state governments at a price of Rs 400/dose.” This comes a day after Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) announced that it will reduce the price of its Covishield vaccine to state governments to Rs 300 per dose. The central government had asked SII and Bharat Biotech to lower the price of their Covid-19 vaccines amid criticism from several states who have accused the companies of profiteering from the crisis.

India reported 3.79 lakh new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, its sharpest spike since the pandemic first gripped the country last year. With this the total caseload rose to 1.8 crore. Meanwhile, with 3,645 deaths, the death toll surged to 2.04 lakh.

Nearly 1.33 crore people registered on the Co-Win platform for the next phase of the nationwide coronavirus vaccination drive, which will cover all adults between the ages of 18 and 45. However, with several states flagging an acute shortage of vaccines, the government is faced with a daunting task. Huge pressure is expected since many young men and women will seek vaccination and want to get back to work at the earliest.
