The cooperation between India and Southeast Asian region began in 1992 when India launched its Look East Policy and the year 2017 marks a significant year for both. Initially confined to the economic sphere, the cooperation rapidly broadened to include the political and security fields when India was accorded full ASEAN dialogue status in 1996. The year 2017 marked 25 years of dialogue, 15 years of summit level meetings, and five years of strategic partnership. The Commemorative Summit marking this important milestone was held in New Delhi, India from 25 to 26th January 2018.
It is according top priority to developing infrastructure for enhancing connectivity within India, especially in the northeast, and extending these connectivity linkages into ASEAN. India’s relationship with ASEAN has strengthened to the extent that the regional grouping is now the anchor of India’s Act East policy. Connectivity with ASEAN and within it remains a core focus area for India.
On a wider plane, CII’s Partnership Summit sought to debate the next phase of global growth and sought to build new bridges between India and the emerging global order.
The 24th edition of the Summit took place in Visakhapatnam during February 24-28, 2018 with the support of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Government of India, and Government of Andhra Pradesh. The Summit which is a unique platform enabling close examination of the partnerships and synergies is expected to spark the next phase of global growth and develop strong multi-country linkages and networks to assist the transformation of the global economy.
The multilateral newsletter, in addition to the above, also looks at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) which is a multilateral development bank with a mission to improve social and economic outcomes in Asia and beyond. Headquartered in Beijing, AIIB commenced operations in January 2016 and has now grown to 84 approved members from around the world. The edition covers major happenings from Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Monetary Fund (IMF), International Finance Corporation (IFC), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
