The swirling controversy over the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is threatening to trigger a backlash at the United Nations. Italy, which has condemned the death penalty as "barbaric", is trying to bring the issue before a sharply divided world body by calling for a "universal moratorium" on capital punishment.




On Wednesday, the U.N.'s High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour made an unusual public appeal to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani asking him to spare the lives of two former colleagues of Saddam Hussein who are due to be executed later this week. The two officials, Awad Hamad al-Bandar and Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan, were co-defendants of the former Iraqi president who was executed last Saturday.
"The concerns I expressed just days ago with respect to the fairness and impartiality of Saddam Hussein's trial apply also to these two defendants," Arbour said.

Execution of Saddam Hussein is a right solution to the problem. You think you will leave alone culprits like this guy and they will go around acting like savages and kill millions of Kurds and other people. That's not right.

Any body who is sympathizing with it remember that terrorists like these people are the ones who attack India and kill innocent people.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Saturday threatened to "review" relations with countries which criticised the bungled execution of Saddam Hussein, saying the hanging was an internal matter.




"The Iraqi government could be obliged to review its relations with any state that fails to respect the wish of the Iraqi people," said Maliki in his first reaction to the ousted president's hanging in Baghdad on December 30.

The tragedies came to light as US President George W. Bush said he wished Saddam's hanging had been carried out in a more dignified way.

"I wish, obviously, that the proceedings had gone on in a more dignified way. But nevertheless, he was given justice," he said. "The thousands of people he killed were not."

Tony Blair's office said Sunday the prime minister believed the manner in which former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was executed was "completely wrong," adding to criticism aired by senior ministers and Blair's likely successor Gordon Brown.

In my opinion taunting of Saddam during his execution and the release of illicitly recorded video was "deplorable" and "completely unacceptable."

On Sunday, new U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent a letter to Iraq's U.N. ambassador urging the Iraqi government to grant a stay of execution to "those whose death sentences may be carried out in the near future."

A 10-year-old boy in Texas hanged himself from his bunk bed in an apparent accident after having seen the execution of Saddam Hussein on television. The child of Guatemalan immigrants, Sergio Pelico was found dead on New Year’s Eve by a relative who was watching the children while their mother Sara Pelico DeLeon was at work. He had pulled a slip-knotted rope around his neck, mimicking what he had seen on TV.

Guards can be heard taunting Saddam just before the lever was pulled and he plunged to his death.
