  • Thousands evacuated as a storm warning in South India

As a storm with winds of 100 kilometres per hour bore down from the Bay of Bengal, Authorities across South India began evacuating thousands of people from the southeastern coast on Friday.

The storm, which is expected to make a landfall later on Friday, follows two weeks of heavy rains and floods. This resulted to more than 110 people dead in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Fishermen in Andhra Pradesh were told not to go out to sea until Sunday.

People living in the coastal villages of Andhra Pradesh have been ordered to move into government-built shelters inland, an official said.

Officials said food packets were being given to thousands of people living in temporary shelters in the city.
