  • Folk Dances of Rajasthan

Rajasthan cannot be imagine without its folk life.

Ghoomar Dance: This Dance is basically a community dance for women and performed on special occasions. The word Ghoomar means ghoomna, moving of the body in circle.

Gait: This Dance is performed only by men in holi. Popular as Dandia Gair in Jodhpur and Geendad in Shekhawati.

Chart Dance: This is popular in the Kisherigarh region and involves dancing with a chari, or pot, on one’s head.

Dance of Fire: A large ground is prepared with live wood and charcoal where the men and boys jump on to the fire. The music gradually rises to increase the enthusiasm of the dancers.

Drum Dance: This Dance is popular in Jalore. Five men are involved with huge drums round their necks. A dancer even holds a naked sword in his mouth and performs vigorously by twirling three painted sticks.

Kathputli: Puppet shows are performed by skilled puppeteers. These puppets are well decorated to act and dance according to the movements of puppeteer. Another person plays the dholak, or drum and sings the song.

Kachhi Ghodi: This is a dance performed on dummy horses. Men in elaborate costumes ride the equally well decorated dummy horses. These dancers dance on the beats of drums. A singer narrates the exploits of the Bavaria bandits of Shekhawati.
