  • NASSCOM Activity Update - October 2016

In the midst of the festive season, October was an action-packed month at NASSCOM. We hosted 2 large Summits – Design & Engineering & NPC. In the former, the focus on design was very strong this year and the theme was about “Imagineering for the Digital Future.” Over two days, more than 600 participants were privy to more than 50 world-class speakers, who shared rich insights, including the likes of Kevin Ashton - the man who coined the term IoT. NPC, the other large event saw upwards of 2000 participants who got to hear more than 200 speakers. “Navigating in turbulent times” the theme was a powerful one given the times we live in, and attracted almost all relevant stakeholders from the Products eco-system. As much as it was about knowledge dissemination, the myth-busting sessions (anti-gyan) were no less vigorous, and stirred up healthy discussions on both sides.

The Emerge 50 Awards concluded at NPC. It was most interesting to see a significant number of startups solving for the B2B segment. Also noteworthy being, the presence of the Hon’ble Minister of IT, Govt of Karnataka, Shri Priyank Kharge who felicitated the League of 10. It was also encouraging to see young, supremely talented Indian entrepreneurs dreaming big, and who have tasked it upon themselves to come up with disruptive solutions to some very complex problems. Simply being in a room bursting with high-decibel energy can be an experience of sorts.

We made a visit to London last month (19 – 21 Oct) and had the opportunity to meet senior UK functionaries including key UK ministers covering FCO, trade and immigration and related officials. Finally, the visit to 10 Downing Street was most eventful and marked a well-rounded visit. Post Brexit and after Theresa May’s India visit in November, we look forward to strengthen bilateral ties and enable free movement of talent. This visit, we are hopeful will take us a step closer. We also organized a member delegation to Australia, and visited the Gold Coast & Melbourne. Our active participation in the Gartner Symposium in Gold Coast was very well received by the members. It provided a great opportunity to meet up with CIOs across many verticals.

Among Industry Insights - we have released the new Start-up Report – Indian Startup Ecosystem Maturing – edition 2016. It is most detailed and the reader will get a good idea about how the eco-system has matured on its journey to be the 3rd ranked globally (in numbers). The silver lining this year - the number of deal sizes have increased over last year, signifying smaller tickets but a greater outreach. Admittedly though, there has been a slump in value terms over last year which we believe to be a temporary one.
