  • Sarabjit for mercy

Affirming it to be a case of mistaken identity, the family of a man sentenced to death on the charge of being a RAW agent has decided to submit a mercy petition to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. The Canada-based South Asian Human Rights Group will take a deputation and meet Musharraf seeking a pardon for the "innocent man". The family plans to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his predecessor Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the matter.

The family of the man Pakistanis identified as Manjit Singh claims he is actually Sarabjit Singh. His sister, Dalbir Kaur, contended that her brother was innocent and never worked for intelligence agencies. She said Singh had crossed the border “inadvertantly” in 1990, was arrested by the Pakistan Rangers and implicated in false cases, Times of India newspaper said. Singh was a smuggler of Indian liquor into Pakistan, the report said.

His family is now planning to meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Premier Atal Behari Vajpayee to urge them to ask Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to grant Sarabjit clemency. They will also file a mercy petition before President Musharraf for securing his release, the Hindustan Times said.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on August 18, ordered that Manjit Singh, must hang after being found guilty of being an agent of India’s spy organisation, Research and Analysis Wing, which was involved in five blasts in Pakistan.
