  • AP docs ignore govt warning; continue strike

Hyderabad: Ignoring the government's warning of action under ESMA, the striking junior doctors in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday vowed to continue their stir till a written assurance was given on deployment of special protection force at all hospitals.

The stand-off showed no signs of abating even after Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy told the medicos to resume their duties by this morning or face action under Essential Services Maintenance Act.

"We will call off the agitation if the government gives a written undertaking to provide security. Let them first deploy special protection force in city hospitals," a spokesman of the Junior Doctors Association said.

Rejecting the demand, Medical and Health Minister G Aruna Kumari said the government had already conceded the main demand of the agitators for issuing an ordinance on protection of hospital staff.

"We cannot do anything more than this. There is no question of giving a written assurance,"
