    CHANDIGARH SPORTS DEPARTMENT


    Since the sports and games play a very important role in physical, mental and social development of human resource, whereas, the excellence in sports enhance the sense of achievement, National Pride and patriotism. The chip of the mind of the master of the City, Le-Corbusior for “care for body and spirit”, sports has been made an integral component of the City Beautiful. A well established and adequately equipped sports stadias and playing grounds in the different disciplines of sports have come up covering all the zones of the City. Not only the courts, stadias, pools and playing areas are provided to the players, these facilities have also been extended to people of Chandigarh in general. The Department has broad based sports and games by involving the educational institutions i.e. Schools & Colleges in rural as well as urban areas, sports associations of various sports and Youth Clubs – under his functional umbrella. Schemes of sports wings, scholarships etc. etc. have been introduced as incentives to the players. Department has 48 coaches working in the various stadias and wings who are imparting training on scientific footings to the players for honing their skills and abilities accordingly. ( Guidelines to sports facilities provided at various centres by the Sports Department are enclosed) Maintenance of the stadia’s is being supervised by dedicated Managers/Supervisors.

    It is proudly to mention that uptill now, Chandigarh has produced so many National & International players and athletes who have donned India colour in various disciplines of sports especially –
    Hockey
    Cricket
    Athletics
    Judo
    Tennis
    Weight
    Lifting
    Boxing
    Wrestling
    Skating etc.

    Chandigarh has proudly engraved a history by hosting so many prestigious National and International Tournaments like – Asian Rowing Championships, Indira Gandhi Women Hockey Gold Cup, Asian School Hockey Tournament, Men Cricket series, Women Cricket Test Matches, ATF Tennis Tournaments, All India Civil Services Tournaments, All India Gurmeet Memorial Hockey, AK Mishra Boxing Championship, National Sports Festival for women, Senior & Junior Nationals in various disciplines of sports etc.

    Youth Affairs

    Since 1997, Sports Department has starting co-ordinating the youth affairs activities alongwith the various activities in Chandigarh. This wing of sports is intend to help young people to find out their potential. The main objective behind the youth affair activities are education, awareness, training self and social development, National Integration. Since it is to retreat that the commitment for the all round development of youth and people of Chandigarh can only be achieved through the introduction of various youth activities among the students, sports participants and general public which may prepare the youth in service of the country through intellectual cultural and social developments. The following youth affair activities are being taken care by above said wing – National Youth Festival, State Youth Festival/Rural Sports, Adventure activities, national Integration camp, leadership and youth camps etc.

    Chandigarh Football & Hockey Academy

    The Chandigarh Football & Hockey Academy has established as per the initiation taken by the Administrator U.T. Chandigarh -cum- H. E. Governor of Punjab with an aim to groom the talent in the discipline of Football & Hockey in this region. Initially, the Chandigarh Football Academy has been started in the year of 2000 with the induction of 24 young boys of 9-10 years of age. Alongwith in August 2002 the Department has taken another leap by instituting Chandigarh Hockey Academy for 24 boys in the 11-12 age group They will be kept in this Academy for seven years, wherein stress on Football & Hockey training as well as education shall be given. The target year of this academy is 2007 in which it is projected that these academies shall definitely provide fresh blood to the Indian teams. Conducive environment for specific coaching and training on scientific basis has been provided in Sports Complex, Sector-42, Chandigarh to achieve the said aim. In this academy all facilities have been provided to the players of Football Academy on “ALL FREE” basis.
