  • 'Hindi first' on social media circular knots by Modi govt

The Narendra Modi government on Thursday was beset by language trouble over a circular issued by the Home Ministry last month asking bureaucrats to post their official social media updates in Hindi first and then in English.

In the 1960s, the DMK made political and emotional capital of an earlier decision to impose Hindi by launching the anti-Hindi agitation, the success of which led to the DMK victory in 1967 paving the way for still-continuing Dravidian party rule in the state.

"The PM should focus on development rather than on promoting Hindi," said Karunanidhi on Thursday, referring to the Modi campaign's constant underlining of development over Hindutva

To defuse the situation, Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that the ministry considers all Indian languages important and is committed to promote them. His deputy, MoS Home Kiren Rijiju said though Hindi is the official language, the importance of regional languages cannot be undermined. But the Home Ministry circular is very clear on Hindi first.
