  • Trouble in Bloggers Park.........!!!

The government's decision to ban certain blogs and websites after Mumbai blasts has evoked widespread protests amongst India's blogger community many of who plan to move court against the ban.

"Instead of banning the whole site - the owner of Blogspot - Google India could have been contacted to shut down certain domains which seemed objectionable to the government," cyber lawyer Pavan Duggal said.

Indian censors have blocked a number of popular blogging sites on the grounds of national security, angering thousands of bloggers.

The real problem is that there is no mention of blogs and bloggers in the legislation. The technology has left the law behind."

India bloggers angry at net ban

The country's 153 internet service providers (ISP) have blocked 17 websites since last week on federal government orders.

Some of these sites belong to Google's Blogspot, a leading international web log hosting service. There are an estimated 50 million internet users in India, according to ISP industry estimates.

Indian bloggers say that the decision is an attack on freedom of speech. Internet professionals and lawyers believe that blocking sites really serves no purpose in a large country like India with an increasingly thriving blogging community.
