  • Ayurveda, why is it banned in Canada?

This 2005 article by Chaitali Chakravarty (below) mentions that health canada banned India's ayurvedic products and that importation will be strictly prohibited. As health canada reacts saying that it is hazardous for human health. This is not the only incident where America banned Indian products, US banned Mustered Oil which is widely used in India. Why does America ban stuff coming out from India? Are the conclusions they themselves negociate on true? How come american medicine has lots of side affects but are never banned in any Country? Does Canada and the States have joint agreement? Why do canadian and american health practitioneers rely on these by taking it themselves and by hidding them from patients?

NEW DELHI: In A move that could deal a blow to India’s ayurvedic agenda in America, the Canadian government has banned the sale of Indian ayurvedic medicines in the country, claiming that they contain high levels of metals like lead, mercury and arsenic, which pose grave health risks.

Hamdard’s Safi, Dabur’s Shilajit, Himalaya Drug’s Karela Capsules and Zandu Pharma’s Maha Sudarshan Churna Powder are some of the medicinal products which Canada has pronounced unsafe for consumption.

Health Canada, the government department, issued a health warning to consumers and made public a list of “unapproved Indian ayurvedic products” on its website on July 14, which also includes names of small-scale ayurvedic manufacturers. It is working with importers and distributors of such products to remove them from the market. Health Canada has also asked people to use only those ayurvedic medicines that are authorised for sale by the company.
“Ayurvedic medicinal products are used in traditional Indian healing and often imported from India. According to the principles of ayurvedic medicines, heavy metals may be used because of their reputed therapeutic properties. However, improper manufacturing processes may result in dangerously high level of heavy metals remaining in the final product. They may pose a particular health risk because they may accumulate in vital organs. For instance, arsenic poisoning can cause swelling of the brain and paralysis,” the company states on its website.
Zandu Pharma’s CEO Narendra Bhatt told ET that incidents such as these dent the image of the entire ayurvedic fraternity. “We should study the matter instead of merely reacting to it. The government and industry should bring out a status report on the ayurvedic industry. Zandu products identified as unsafe by Canada are herbal in nature and don’t contain metals. In any case, we don’t import to Canada directly. Our products reach grocers through distributors. However, the industry requires strict monitoring, ” Mr Bhatt said.
Meanwhile, Dabur said it has not exported any consignment of Maha Sudarshan Churna to Canada. “We will get in touch with the Canadian authorities through the ministry of health and family welfare to obtain details of the product they have tested and the testing procedures, to gauge the veracity of their claims. Shilajit is a rock extract and does not contain metal. The alarm issued by the Canadian healthcare authorities is unreasonable,” a Dabur spokesperson said.
Metals form an integral part of ayurvedic medicines as they have therapeutic properties. Dabur follows manufacturing standards set by the Indian government. The medicines are safe for consumption, the spokesperson added.
The Canadian government’s advisory follows a review of the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that found potentially harmful levels of lead, mercury and arsenic in 14 commercially available ayurvedic medicinal products sold in Boston.

I believe its a web of untruth

Yes it seems like bull, the ref. for the article is http://www1.economictimes.indiatimes...ow/1176718.cms.

An Indian I know in Canada has been using a medicine brand for years because she requires it and it is only recently that she is having a hard time finding one because the indian grocer she usually goes to no longer carries it. But the medicine sells rarely in the states through the internet for a lot more though. why buy it their when the logic is that she could find a western medicine locally and then get toxicated with other symptoms so that she will rely on other western medicine, or another choice would yield a very sad outcome. This is one Indian but think about it how many more in America would make that same choice.

      read more, its a conspiracy...

It is like americans are underestimating the integrity of indians by making them feel unwelcome or extracting the last revenue from from them.

Ayurvedic medicines don’t have any side effect... Alopathy medicine can have side effect.

Ayurveda (the science of living), the Vedic system of medicine originating over 3000 years ago, views health as harmony between body, mind and spirit. As per Ayurveda health and disease are not predetermined and life may be prolonged by human effort.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine from India that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and folks with health challenges can improve their health.

In 2001 archaeologists studying the remains of two men from Mehrgarh, India, made the discovery that the people of Indus Valley Civilization, even from the early Harappan periods (c. 3300 BC), had knowledge of medicine and dentistry. The physical anthropologist that carried out the examinations, Professor Andrea Cucina from the University of Missouri-Columbia, made the discovery when he was cleaning the teeth from one of the men Later research in the same area found evidence of teeth having been drilled, dating back 9,000 years

Ayurvedic medicine is a form of alternative medicine in use primarily in the Indian subcontinent. The word "Ayurveda" is a tatpurusha compound of āyus "life" and veda "knowledge", and would roughly translate as the "Science of Life". Ayurveda deals with the measures of healthy living, along with therapeutic measures that relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony. Ayurveda is also one among the few traditional systems of medicine involving surgery.

Āyurveda speaks of eight branches: kāyāchikitsā (internal medicine), shalyachikitsā (surgery including anatomy), shālākyachikitsā (eye, ear, nose, and throat diseases), kaumārabhritya (pediatrics), bhūtavidyā (psychiatry, or demonology), and agada tantra (toxicology), rasāyana (science of rejuvenation), and vājīkarana (the science of fertility).

Apart from learning these, the student of Āyurveda was expected to know ten arts that were indispensable in the preparation and application of his medicines: distillation, operative skills, cooking, horticulture, metallurgy, sugar manufacture, pharmacy, analysis and separation of minerals, compounding of metals, and preparation of alkalis. The teaching of various subjects was done during the instruction of relevant clinical subjects.

Ayurveda was practiced during the time of Buddha (around 520 BC) , and in this period the Ayurvedic practitioners were commonly using Mercuric-sulphur combination based medicines. In this period Mercury and sulphur and other metals were used in conjunction with herbs to prepare the different medications. The knowledge of Ayurveda progressed a lot during this period; and is therefore termed as the Golden Period of Ayurveda

Note:- Sushruta is often known as the "Father of Surgery" for his important contributions in the Susrutha Samhita, which describes in detail the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of numerous ailments, as well as procedures on performing various forms of plastic surgery, such as cosmetic surgery and rhinoplasty.

[6] Do you suffer with respiratory problems?
[6] Have you ever had low back pain?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above and would like some help alleviating these problems Ayurveda may have the answer for you. If you want to learn more about Ayurveda and how it can help, please read on.

Ayurveda sees that the two main areas that affect our health and wellness are the foods we eat and the lifestyle we live. By changing our nutritional protocol and lifestyle, we can greatl y influence our physical, mental, and emotional health.

If you're having difficulty remembering things or acquiring a good night's sleep, this can be caused by an overly-active mind or too much stress in one's life. Ayurveda suggests that you bring more regularity to activities such as the time you eat your meals and when you go to bed. You can also give yourself a warm oil massage before bathing. Create time in your schedule to relax and have some f un- for example, take a leisurely walk or get out in nature.

Digestive disorders are most commonly caused by eating foods that don't support us such as fermented, heavy, or excessively rich foods and/or foods that are either too spicy, sour or salty. By eating lighter foods that are easier to digest, avoiding processed foods, and avoiding ice cold beverages you can resolve many digestive problems.

How about low energy? Being overly stimulated can result in the depletion of your energy level (called "burnout" in the west). Ayurveda suggests getting more slee p. Bringing more regularity to your diet and lifestyle can greatly improve your energy level. In addition calming our mind can also be a great help. This can be done by simply taking a few minutes a day to sit calmly and relax while taking long, full, deep breaths. Ayurveda also sees the need to have an adequate amount of good healthy fun in one's life to help keep us happy. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol which cause burn out. Instead, try getting to sleep earlier, and you'll wake up with more energy.

Skin problems are a result of excessively oily skin and too much heat in the body. Foods that are deep fried or overly spicy can create skin eruptions. Not taki ng proper precautions against the rays of the sun will also aggravate the skin. Certain harsh, abrasive chemicals and synthetic fibers can adversely affect the skin so try to wear natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and silk. Whenever possible protect your self from exposure to toxic chemicals. Ayurveda sees that certain foods like white rice, watermelon, and coriander can alleviate many skin problems. Of course, in some instances skin can become extremely dry. In that case a warm oil massage a few times ea ch week will restore the texture of the skin. Most skin problems, however, are a result of the Pitta dosha being out of balance. Therefore, we suggest a regime that reduces Pitta.

Allergies and respiratory problems can be especially bad in the spring season. For people living in cold, damp climates this can be particularly challenging. Keepi ng dry and warm is one way to help with these problems. Certain foods that are heavy and oily, like dairy products and wheat, will also create excessive mucus, thereby causing allergies to be more pronounced. Foods that are warm and drying, such as fresh ginger and black pepper, can reduce excessive mucus. Ayurveda puts great empha sis on food as a way to help control allergies. However, we also see that stress can play a role as well. Try to make some time for recreation and eat foods that are fresher and lighter. We see that this is a result of excessive water in the body.

Low back pain is a problem for many people from time to time. Sitting too much is probably the greatest contributor, so get out and exercise. Do some light str etching at work for a few minutes a day. Warm oil massage and soaking in a warm tub can help with low back pain.

Ayurveda is from India & its always difficult for western country to digest about strenght of yoga and ayurveda, they always think what they make is good... but at the end they follow Indian path or they try to stole from Indian culture and vedas.... ha ha ha ... ...

For Basmati, Turmeric, Neeam ...etc.... why they ran to have trade mark in their name.. ha ha ha...

In India Mustard turmeric etc. are used in our food...

If someone will ask vegetarian food in western country they will give them grass they dont know how to cook even food.

Advance countries think they are super power but fact is they are behaving like thieves....

I am Proud to be Indian
