    India: The next Giant

This week was marked by two significant events that possibly herald India’s entry into the elite Technology Superpower club and confirms the same.

The first was the successful re-entry and recovery of the Space Capsule Recovery Experiment spacecraft that was wholly conducted and supervised by our very own ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), which marks India’s entry into the elite club of countries comprising of Russia, United States, France, China and Japan that have the expertise to safely bring back spacecrafts after the completion of their missions. This is an extremely technologically sophisticated task and is much more complicated than it sounds. Although the launching of spacecrafts into outer space is something that is routine but the re-entry and the recovery of such crafts require mastery over several technological branches that tries to deal with the harsh atmospheric conditions that the craft faces while re-entering the earth. The biggest task being thermal management or how to protect the craft from burning up while it accelerates through the atmosphere on re-entry.

The second event that indicated that India is well on its way to become a technological superpower is when the Russian Defence Minister, here on the eve of Russian President Putin’s visit, signed several deals of technological co-operation and development with India in the defence sector. This again indicates that India has now reached a certain advanced stage of technological prowess that merits joint co-operation with a technological superpower such as Russia.

The above two events clearly signal that India is fast moving from being a technologically developing country to a developed one

Thus, the future is bright for India and it is certainly taking the right steps to strengthen itself and emerge as a true giant.

I would love the day India makes jet fighters and launches spacecrafts and people into space all on its own. That day India will truly enter into the league of the US, Russia, France etc. India can be said to be edging towards that day and Russia is India's best friend to partner with it in developing such technology marvels like the fastest cruise missile (Brahmos) and now agreeing to develop the next generation fighter jet with India.

      India’s Space Odyssey
India’s space research achieved a milestone with the successful return of the Indian Space Research Organisation's recoverable satellite on January 22, 2007. As part of the mission, ISRO's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C7) had put Space Capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE) satellite into space along with three others on January 10, 2007. The 550-kg SRE, that would help ISRO hone its skills in re-entry, recoverable and re-usable technologies, had two payloads to conduct experiments in micro-gravity

I think one more thing we can be proud of is the Gandhian principles that ISRO follows. It is good to see that although they are interested in reaching the far depths of outer space, they are also working hard to provide satellite systems that help the aam admi such as the ground composition satellite they sent out a few years ago to map ground water systems for farmers. If we all help and do our bit India will once again reclaim her rightful place among the greatest civilizations on Earth. Jai Hind!
