  • Punjab University's microbiology department gets Rs 1.19-crore UGC grant

    The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned a grant of Rs 1.19 crore to the department of microbiology, Punjab University (PU), for carrying out research on 'Enzymatic Approaches in Industrial Processes and Biotherapeutics'. The project has been sanctioned under the special assistance programme (SAP) for the next five years. This will be a big boost to the research efforts of the department in liaison with industry.

    The new SAP programme, the microbiology faculty will develop enzyme-based, eco-friendly processes for paper industry and for bio-ethanol production. Enzyme-based technologies will also be developed to treat microbial infections caused by multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

        The project has been sanctioned under the special assistance programme (SAP) for the next five years. This will be a big boost to the research efforts of the department in liaison with industry.

          The SAP programme is being coordinated by faculty members Prince Sharma, Kusum Harjai and Naveen Gupta. PU's microbiology department has in the past transferred technologies to industries and also has several patents to its credit.
