  • Alastair Cook becomes England's leading Test run-scorer

Alastair Cook became England's leading all-time run-scorer in Test cricket on Saturday, overtaking the record of mentor and friend Graham Gooch that has stood for 20 years.

The England captain began the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley 31 runs behind Gooch, who held the national record of 8,900.

Cook passed the milestone just after the lunch interval on day two of the Test when he pushed a firm drive off Tim Southee through the covers for four, taking him to 33 for the innings.
