Bush condemns assassination of Pakistan's Bhutto

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President George W. Bush condemned the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto on Thursday and the United States urged Pakistan, a key ally in its war against terrorism, to proceed with elections planned for Jan. 8.

"The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy," Bush told reporters on the outskirts of his Texas ranch. "Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice."

U.S. officials called for Pakistan to go ahead with the elections, despite what appeared to be a huge blow to Washington's efforts to promote a democratic transition after eight years of military rule by President Pervez Musharraf.

"I do think that it would be a victory for no one but the extremists responsible for this attack to have some kind of postponement or a delay directly related to it in the democratic process,"
State Department spokesman Tom Casey said...Read...

Pakistani paramilitary forces on 'red alert'

Pakistani paramilitary forces were put on "red alert" nation-wide on Thursday following the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Cheema said.

"We have put the country on red alert. We have put paramilitary forces in the provinces at their disposal so they can ensure security and peace," said Cheema.

Pakistan police used tear gas and batons to break up an angry demonstration Thursday in the city of Peshawar after the assassination of Bhutto.

The body of Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto arrived in her family village for burial on Friday, hours after her assassination plunged the nuclear-armed country into one of the worst crises in its 60-year history. Her killing on Thursday after an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi triggered a wave of violence, especially in her native Sindh province, and stoked fears that a January 8 election meant to return Pakistan to civilian rule could be put off.

World leaders urged Pakistan not to be deflected from a course toward democracy, as fears of further instability in a region racked by Islamist militancy roiled markets on Friday and triggered a flight to less risky assets such as bonds and gold.

The best hope of Pakistan becoming a stable democracy anytime soon may have died with Benazir Bhutto.

She was the closest thing Pakistan had to a Kennedy. Regal, heir to a tragedy-stricken political dynasty, her rhetorical skills sharpened at Harvard and Oxford, the two-time prime minister was the public face of the democratic, pro-Western leadership the U.S. government wants to see running Pakistan.

There was an appalling sense of inevitability about the death of Benazir Bhutto at an election rally in Rawalpindi. The risk she had taken in returning to Pakistan was brutally apparent from the moment her plane touched down. The failed attempt on her life during the interminable procession that day showed how inadequate her protection would be if she continued her campaign. That she did so nonetheless showed admirable, if perhaps foolhardy, courage. An accursed symmetry had it that she died yesterday in the same garrison city where her deposed father was executed. Her quest to avenge his death and return elected government to Pakistan came to naught.

The Al Qaeda terror group has claimed responsibility for the assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Adnkronos International (AKI) news agency reported."We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat (the) mujahadeen," it quoted Al Qaeda commander and main spokesperson Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid as saying in a phone call from an unknown location, speaking in faltering English.

According to the agency, Al-Yazid is the main Al Qaeda commander in Afghanistan.

"It is believed that the decision to kill Bhutto...was made by al-Qaeda No. 2, the Egyptian doctor, Ayman al-Zawahiri in October," AKI said.

"Death squads were allegedly constituted for the mission and ultimately one cell comprising a defunct Lashkar-i-Jhangvi's Punjabi volunteer succeeded in killing Bhutto," it added.

The United States appealed for calm and urged its "war on terror" ally Pakistan to press on with its elections after the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

Condemning the "cowardly" suicide attack that killed her, US President George W. Bush urged Pakistanis Thursday "to honor Benazir Bhutto's memory by continuing with the democratic process for which she so bravely gave her life."
The attack at an election rally in the Pakistani city Rawalpindi sparked deadly riots and fears for stability in the nuclear-armed country, as well as overshadowing next month's planned elections, which Bhutto had been tipped to win.

Bush telephoned Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to discuss the situation, the White House said, while US officials appealed for calm in Pakistan amid deadly riots following Bhutto's murder.
