Last Surviving Member Of first Lok Sabha Passes Away

The last Maharaja of Dumraon and the last surviving member of the first Lok Sabha, Kamal Singh, died after a prolonged illness at his Bhojpur Kothi residence at Dumraon, in Bihar's Buxar, on Sunday. He was 94. He will be cremated with full state honors on the banks of the Ganga at Buxar on Monday. Elected to the first Lok Sabha in 1952 at the age of 25, Singh was the country's youngest MP. He represented Buxar parliamentary constituency in the Lower House as an Independent till 1962. He contested parliamentary polls again in 1989 and 1991 from Buxar on a BJP ticket but lost to CPI's Tej Narayan Yadav on both occasions.
Singh's demise has caused widespread grief in the old Shahabad region where he was regarded for his charity. He is credited with having opened a number of educational institutions and health facilities for the poor. Expressing grief over his demise, chief minister Nitish Kumar announced that Singh would be cremated with full state honors. In his condolence message, he said Singh had played a key role in the education and health sectors.

Delhi Election 2020: Will Modi magic beat Kejriwal's governance?

Will the AAP retain power? Can the BJP end its dry-run in Delhi after 21 years? What is the role of the Congress party in this Assembly election? Here's what the numbers say.
Who will win the Delhi Assembly election 2020? Will Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retain power on its claim of work on electricity, health, schools, and water, etc.? Or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will turn the table in the name of 'Modi, Mandir and persecuted Hindu minorities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan'?

This we will get to know on February 11. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the 11th Delhi Assembly Election. 1.46 crore voters of Delhi will cast their votes on February 8 to decide who will govern the national capital. Will the AAP retain power? Can the BJP end its dry-run in Delhi after 21 years? What is the role of the Congress party in this Assembly election?

                Decisive nature of Delhi voters

This needs a careful reading of the Delhi voters' mood, as elections in Delhi at different levels produce different outcomes. Since the inception of the AAP in Delhi election 2013, the electoral fight became triangular. However, the choices of Delhi voters mostly very decisive when it comes to choose their government except 2013 polls- be it Assembly, Lok Sabha or MCD.
What is significant in the above graph is that since the emergence of the AAP in Delhi, the Congress party has became a distant third party in the state which ran Delhi continuously 15 years between 1998 and 2013.

Second, that the AAP gained against Congress mostly as the BJP's vote share has been continuously stagnant between 32 and 36 percent in the last three Assembly elections. The minimum for the BJP in Delhi Assembly was 32 percent votes in 2015.

Uttrakhand Assembly Ratifies Bill To Extend Quota To SC/ST In Lok Sabha And State Assemblies

The Uttarakhand assembly in a Special Session on Tuesday unanimously ratified the Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill, 2019, which proposes to extend quota to SC/ST in Lok Sabha and state assemblies by another 10 years. However, no such extension was provided to Anglo Indian quota in state assemblies and Lok Sabha. The Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on December 10 and 12, respectively, in 2019. The provisions under the Bill will be effective from January 25, 2020. As per Article 168 of the Constitution, the Bill must be ratified by at least 50% of the state assemblies before its implementation.

5 factors that will determine who wins the Delhi Assembly election

Delhi Assembly election is a closely contested three-dimensional political battle. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi chief minister, has much at stake in the Delhi Assembly election for this is the only place where it is in power.

Mamata Banerjee sharing dais with PM Modi in Kolkata remains uncertain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend a 150th-anniversary function of Kolkata Port Trust (KOPT) on January 12 and according to KOPT sources, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has also been invited for the program.
A mid the wide-spread protests against recent changes in the citizenship law, the prospect of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee sharing dias with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 150th-anniversary function of Kolkota Port Trust in Kolkata on Sunday remained uncertain on Thursday.

There was neither any confirmation nor denial on whether Mamta Banerjee would attend the program, said a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader.

PM Modi will be on a two-day visit to Kolkata from January 11 and is scheduled to attend 150th-anniversary function of Kolkata Port Trust (KOPT) on January 12, among many other scheduled programs.

According to KOPT sources, Mamta Banerjee has also been invited for the program.

But TMC top brass remained tight-lipped on whether Mamta Banerjee would attend the event.

"It is not clear if our party supremo would attend the program. Nothing has been decided so far. The picture would be clear only after Friday afternoon," a TMC leader said.

"The situation right now is very fragile, given the intensity of protests we have launched against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA]. Our state (TMC) government had openly said we would not implement the Act in the state. So now whether the top leaders of both the parties would share dais or not is a million-dollar question," another TMC leader said.

Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged the main contender of the TMC in the state during the recent Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi and Mamta Banerjee have not shared the dais at any government program.
