There are two main types of IP addresses:
- IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4):
- Format: four sets of numbers separated by periods.
- It is the most commonly used version but limited to around 4.3 billion unique addresses.
- IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6):
- Format: eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons.
- Created to solve the shortage of IPv4 addresses, it offers a much larger address pool.
There are two types of IP addresses when considering public and private networks:
- Public IP address: Used to identify a device on the broader internet. This is the address visible to the outside world when you visit websites or communicate with external servers.
- Private IP address: Used within a private network (like your home Wi-Fi network) to identify devices locally. Routers assign these addresses.
Additionally, an IP address can be:
- Static: Manually assigned and doesn’t change unless modified.
- Dynamic: Automatically assigned by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and may change periodically.
