                such features are callled "easter eggs".
                An Easter Egg is a undocumented little surprise hidden in a software program.But i think the above surprice is documented by microsoft..it is a function built for quickly filling up space with text and helps with testing

                Heres another famous minesweeper easter egg
                Minimize all other window , if there are any.
                Run Minesweeper
                hold down shift key and type xyzzy
                press shift key again

                Now whenever your mouse cursor is over one of the mines, In Windows XP the pixel in the upper left corner of the screen is white when you are NOT over a mine and is normal when you are. you may need to choose a non white wall paper to see the change in the upper left pixel of the wall paper.

                    its slightly different in each version of windows opearing system... i think its different for windows me..try googling "easter eggs" along with operating system names.
