Intel Shows Off Foldable Computer Of The Future

Intel has created a foldable computer that resembles a computer monitor when flat and an all-screen laptop when half-closed. The device is intended to inspire computer manufacturers to come up with new ways to use flexible-screen tech. But when Zoe Kleinman saw the device at the CES tech expo in Las Vegas she wondered how robust it would be in practice.

    Sony Announces Electric Car Concept

Electronics giant Sony has surprised attendees of the CES tech show by unveiling an electric car dubbed the Vision S. The vehicle is a prototype designed to show off the firm's sensors and in-car entertainment technologies. The dashboard is flanked by an ultra-wide panoramic screen "for driving information and entertainment". However, Sony did not indicate that it had any plans to sell the car to the public. "We will accelerate our efforts to contribute to the future of mobility," said Sony's chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida as he revealed the surprise.

Bob O'Donnell, from Technalysis Research, was at the press event. "It was quite a shock, to be honest with you," he told the BBC. "It highlights how the company is reinventing itself." Among the internal features of the car is sensing technology that can detect occupants of the vehicle and recognise them, in order to allow for gesture control of the entertainment systems. In total, Sony has included 33 sensors in the Vision S prototype. The Japanese firm is known to have developed powerful image sensors that can be used to analyse the road in front of a vehicle.

Mr O'Donnell said that such technology could perhaps aid assisted-driving systems in future vehicles, helping judge when to apply the brakes or adjust the steering but still leaving most decisions up to the motorist. "Assisted driving could be as useful, in fact, in some ways even more useful than autonomous driving," he added.

      OnePlus Concept One

The company has collaborated with McLaren to build this new smartphone that for now remains a concept device, but could soon become a mass-market product.
OnePlus finally took the lid off the Concept One smartphone that it has been teasing for a while now. The smartphone was unveiled at CES 2020 as the company’s latest concept smartphone. The phone brings with it a premium design, but what makes it truly interesting is the fact the smartphone comes with new invisible cameras at the rear panel.

The company has collaborated with McLaren to build this new smartphone that for now remains a concept device, but could soon become a smartphone that will be sold to the masses. Unveiling the smartphone at the event, OnePlus revealed that the inspiration for the smartphone has been drawn from McLaren's 720S Spider luxury sports car, which features a retractable hardtop glazed with an electrochromic glass panel.

As per the company, it has used the same electrochromic glass at the rear panel of the OnePlus Concept One smartphone that was used in the car. It further revealed that the company has used organic particles to create changes in the glass covering the camera lenses to create the invisible glass effect.
The glass itself is quite unique. It can shift from opaque black to transparent within 0.7 seconds. OnePlus has also revealed that apart from color shifting technology, the glass also brings to the table practical benefit as it acts as a built-in polarizing filter for the camera.

OnePlus claims that this is the most advanced electrochromic glass ever made and the design of the Concept One shows two glass panels sandwich the organic material between them and measure just 0.1mm each, for a combined thickness of just 0.35mm. The glass panel is also being claimed to use almost no power to operate.

Apart from this, OnePlus hasn’t revealed any details about the specifications of the device but considering its OnePlus, we expect the phone to be packed with only the best that is available in the market right now.

In terms of the design, the phone features at the back in McLaren's signature Papaya Orange shade. The frame of the phone has been revealed to have been made out of an aluminum alloy that’s treated with a new vapor deposition process to give the phone its thin gold finish layer precisely.

Skagen Falster 3 Wear OS Smartwatch With Snapdragon 3100 SoC Launched

Watchmaker Skagen has launched a successor to its Skagen Falster 2 wearable called the Skagen Falster 3. Just like the previous smartwatch, this too runs Wear OS by Google. Skagen is a subsidiary of Fossil which also makes Wear OS smartwatches. The Skagen Faster gets the newer, more powerful Snapdragon 3100 SoC and has a speaker as well which will allow users to take phone calls through the watch directly. Skagen has also introduced a Limited Edition Falster 3 in collaboration with DJ Kygo.

The Skagen Falster 3 has a similar design to the Falster 2 and has two push buttons on the right side and a rotating crown in the middle. This rotating crown can be used to navigate through the watch menus. The Skagen Falster 3 shares similar internals as the Fossil Gen 5 smartwatches.

The Falster 3 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 processor and has 1GB of RAM along with 8GB of storage. This is similar to the Fossil Gen 5 which was recently launched in India. It is available in one size only with the dial measuring 42mm which houses a 1.3-inch OLED display. Skagen has also added a speaker on this watch while enables a user to answer a call directly from the watch. It can also be used to play stored music on the watch, play notification sounds and by the Google Assistant to reply to a query through the speaker.

Wacky concept cars, flying machines and smart bikes are being exhibited at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. In recent years, car tech has become an increasingly important staple of the expo as firms seek the next mega-product after the smartphone. Chip-makers and app-creators are all piling in. But the traditional car-makers are not resting on their laurels.

The efforts go far beyond new sensors for driverless vehicles - this year there are a host of flamboyant designs for entire vehicles on show. Honda, for one, is allowing attendees to sit in its bulbous, buggy-like concept car with minimalistic driving controls. It has no pedals and a disc-shaped steering wheel that is pushed or pulled like a giant button in order to control acceleration.

Google Assistant Gets New Features At CES 2020

At CES 2020, Google has made several announcements regarding the Google Assistant. The company says that it is now available on more than 1 billion devices, and is used by more than 500 million people every month. The voice-based assistant is active on several devices – smart speakers, phones, TVs, cars, smart displays, and more. Google introduced new features related to Google Assistant at CES this year, the key ones being the ability to schedule actions for later, the ability to read articles out loud in a more natural-sounding manner and in over 42 languages, and easy access to privacy settings. The tech giant also expanded its Interpreter Mode feature to new places like airports, banks, and more hotels. Here's a rundown all the new features coming to Google Assistant this year:

            Scheduled actions
This feature will essentially let you order Assistant to do a task in the future, offering more granular control. You can ask Google Assistant to turn on/ off or start/ stop a compatible device at the time of your choosing. For instance, you can say, “Hey Google, run the coffee maker at 6 am” and the connected smart device should do the task at the mentioned time. You can control more than 20 new devices, including AC units, air purifiers, bathtubs, coffee makers, vacuums and more, from the Google Home app. This Scheduled Actions feature is rolling out later this year.

            Screen reading
Google previewed the ability to read long-form articles out loud using Google Assistant. An Android user can say “Hey Google, read it” or “Hey Google, read this page” when you're viewing an article, and the Assistant should read it out loud to you. “Unlike traditional screen readers, this experience is built on new voice datasets to create more expressive and more natural sounding voices, so it's easier to listen for a longer period of time. There are many potential ways in which this can be helpful, but one area we're exploring is reading webpages with long-form content on your phone—like a news article, blog or short story—out loud,” the company explains in its blog post.

Interpreter Mode expands to airports, banks, more
Google introduced Interpreter mode last year – a real-time translation feature to help communicate better with people of varied dialects. At CES, the tech giant announced partnerships with systems integrators Volara and SONIFI to launch a full-service solution for helping business remove language barriers as well.

            Easier access to privacy settings
Google also made some privacy-related tweaks to Google Assistant, and users will easily be able access privacy controls via the voice assistant. Users can ask questions like “How do you keep my information private?” to get answers to the most common privacy and security questions. People can also use voice commands like, “Hey Google, delete everything I said to you this week” and all the Assistant activity from your Google Account will be deleted easily.

            Household notes on smart displays
Google Assistant on smart displays will get the ability to create household notes on the screen for members of the house to see the tasks done before you left. For example, you can say, “Hey Google, leave a note that says I already fed Max breakfast.” This note can be created by anyone without the need to sign in. This feature is scheduled to roll out later this year.

            Household contact list
Just like sticky notes, Google Assistant will enable users to set up speed dial contacts to quickly and easily make calls. Once set up, anyone can dial the pre-set contact easily. For instance, you can call your neighbour by saying "Hey Google, call Tasneem" or by tapping on Tasneem's name on your smart display's household contacts list. This feature will also be rolled out later in the year.

            Google Assistant on more devices
Furthermore, Google Assistant will work on more devices this year, including August Smart Locks, Philips Hue HDMI Sync Box, Telus Wi-Fi Hub routers, GE Appliances Ultrafresh Front Load Washer, MOEN shower, D-Link Outdoor Wi-Fi Spotlight camera, VIAROOM Smart, Somfy TaHoma Hub, Yeelight Staria Bedside Lamp Pro and MerossSmart's garage door opener.

              MediaTek

The Dimensity 800 series chipset is the company’s latest solution for mid-range and upper mid-range smartphones. The first devices featuring the chipset are expected to launch later this year.
Taiwanese semiconductor maker, MediaTek, has finally launched the Dimensity 800 series chipset as the company’s latest solution for mid-range and upper mid-range smartphones. The Dimensity 800 5G chipset offers integrated 5G modems and was announced by the company at CES 2020. The first devices featuring Dimensity 800 Series SoCs are expected to launch in the first half of this year.

"MediaTek has already launched its flagship 5G smartphone solution, the Dimensity 1000, and with the 800 series 5G chipset family, we are bringing 5G to the mid-tier and mass market," TL Lee, Head of MediaTek's wireless business unit, said in a statement.

He further went on to add, "The Dimensity 800 series will power the new premium segment for 5G, bringing consumers flagship smartphone features and performance at mid-range price points.

The Dimensity 800 Series chipset is an octa-core SoC that brings with it four ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked up to 2GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to the same frequency. For GPU, it brings four Dimensity 1000-class GPU IP cores, combined with the company's HyperEngine gaming tech.

The APU 3.0 unit on board is meant to process AI-specific tasks, while the SoC supports up to 64-megapixel camera sensors and large multi-camera options such as 32-megapixel + 16-megapixel dual cameras. MediaTek is also touting multi-frame 4K video HDR capabilities, and support for up to 90Hz full-HD resolution displays.

A few weeks ago, the company had announced the unveiling of the Dimensity 1000 5G chipset -- which is the company’s return to the high-end segment where it will have to take on the likes of Samsung’s Exynos 9810 Snapdragon 855 and Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC.

The Dimensity 1000 5G features four high-end Cortex-A77 based BIG cores clocked at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores clocked at 2.2GHz. It comes with a dual cluster arrangement instead of the tri-cluster arrangements that we’ve been seeing on high-end processors like Kirin 990, Snapdragon 855 and even Exynos 990.

For graphics, the new MediaTek chip comes with the new Mali-G77 MP9 GPU and comes integrated with the Helio M70 5G modem that saves space and is efficient at the same time and is the world’s fastest throughput SoC with 4.7Gbps downlink and 2.5Gbps uplink speeds and supports both standalone and non-standalone networks (Sa/NSA).
