How to visit Atal Tunnel (Manali → Lahaul/Spiti): permits, timings, distance, problems & how to avoid them
Atal Tunnel is the 9.02 km all-weather highway tunnel under Rohtang Pass that connects Manali (Kullu) to Lahaul & Spiti (Sissu/Keylong). The South Portal is ~25 km from Manali (≈45–60 min drive); the tunnel itself takes ~15 min; then 37 km to Keylong (~1 hr).
1) Do you need a permit?
- Yes — Vehicles crossing Atal Tunnel towards Lahaul/Spiti require a free e-permit from the Himachal e-Aagman Portal.
- E-Permit is required for the Atal Tunnel → Rohtang → Koksar → Chandratal circuit. Other places may need an E-Ticket (a different type); check the portal before traveling.
- Apply online up to 9 days in advance (recommended).
- Apply here: https://eaagman.hp.gov.in (official e-Aagman portal)
- Best season: Summer (Apr–Jun) is most popular; Autumn (Sep–Nov) is ideal for photography & peaceful trips.
- Go early: Start from Manali by 6–7 AM to reach South Portal before peak traffic; late mornings get congested.
- Check traffic before leaving: Use Google Maps/traffic apps to see current jams before heading to the tunnel.
- Manali → South Portal: ~24–25 km, ~45–60 min
- South → North Portal (inside tunnel): 9.02 km, ~15 min
- North Portal → Sissu: ~10–12 km (~15–20 min); North Portal → Keylong: 37 km (~1 hr)
- Total one-way (Manali → Keylong): ~100+ km, ~2.5–3.5 hrs without long stops; commonly 4–6 hrs for a day trip including stops.
- Traffic jams at the tunnel: frequent, especially midday; avoid by starting early and checking live traffic.
- Snow/ice & slippery roads: can happen even in warmer months; carry chains if advised, reduce speed, keep fuel high.
- Accidents & emergency response: rare but possible; keep emergency numbers handy, follow lane discipline, no overtaking inside the tunnel.
- Altitude & weather: North Portal ~3071 m; expect cold, windy conditions; carry warm layers, gloves, cap.
- Permit confusion: Many visitors forget the e-permit and get stopped at checkpoints; apply online, print/save the PDF, and keep the vehicle RC, driving license, and insurance handy.
- North Portal views: Sissu valley, waterfall, snow-covered peaks — great for photos.
- Day trip options: Manali → tunnel → Sissu → Solang Valley → return to Manali.
- Lahaul/Spiti circuit: Use the tunnel as a gateway to Keylong, Koksar, Chandratal; plan overnight if doing the full circuit.
- Before leaving Manali, apply for an e-permit at eaagman.hp.gov.in, print/save it ( https://eaagman.hp.gov.in/) Apply Here https://eaagman.hp.gov.in/index.php/...ns/epass/apply
- Vehicle: check brakes, coolant, tires, spare; carry chains if advised
- Clothing: warm layers, windproof jacket, gloves
- Food & water: carry snacks & water; limited reliable shops inside the tunnel zone
- Communication: network may be patchy; download offline maps
- Inside tunnel: keep speed ≤ 80 km/h (or as posted), no U-turn/overtaking, keep lights on, follow police/tunnel authority directions
- 6:30 AM: Leave Manali → 7:30 AM: South Portal entry (free tunnel access if permit valid) → 7:45 AM: North Portal exit → 8:00 AM: Sissu photos & waterfall → 10:00 AM: return via tunnel → 11:00 AM: stop at Solang → 12:30 PM: back to Manali. Adjust based on traffic.
⚠️ Important: If you're heading to Koksar/Chandratal or continuing beyond Sissu, ensure you have the E-Permit (not just E-Ticket).
