Delhi Elections: Only 19.37% Voting Recorded Till 1 Pm, Muslim Dominated Okhla Sees Lowest Voting At Only 5%

The people of Delhi seems to have chosen to sit at home instead of casting their vote in the ongoing Delhi assembly elections. The voting has been extremely slow as only 19.37 per cent of the registered voters made it to voting booths till 1 PM to exercise their right. Reportedly, polling for Delhi assembly polls has now slowly picked up as at 12 noon, only 15.57 per cent voter turnout was recorded, according to Election Commission.

Sultanpur Majra has recorded the highest polling with 25% while Muslim-dominated Okhla has registered only at 5%, the lowest in Delhi. Earlier, we had reported on how voters of Jamia Nagar of Okhla constituency, who had once shouted ‘Hum Khagaz Nahi Dhikayenge’, thronged to the voting booth after Muslim clerics had issued diktats to voters to cast their vote. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party will look to win another five-year term in the office, while the BJP which has emerged as the principal opposition will look to wrest power and form its own government. The results of these elections will be declared on February 11.

Delhi Election Results Live Updates: Delhi Listens To APP Ki Baat! No Entry For Congress

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has breached the psychological mark of 62, while BJP has been reduced to just 08 seats. Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had held several rallies in Delhi, primarily on the agendas of Citizenship Amendment Act. Meanwhile, congratulatory messages have starting coming in as Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) looks all set to form the government in the national capital. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee congratulated Kejriwal, saying people had rejected the BJP. "Only development will work, CAA, NRC and NPR will be rejected," she added. DMK chief MK Stalin also dubbed Arvind Kejriwal's victory as a "massive mandate" for development over "communal politics". As per the latest election trends, AAP is ahead on 58 seats while the BJP is lagging behind on 12 seats. The Congress Party, however, is nowhere in the race.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has secured another term in office after his party won a resounding victory in elections in the capital

Voters overwhelmingly backed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in an election which pitted them against India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

It's a setback for the BJP after last year's general election landslide.

The party won five more seats in Delhi but still holds just eight out of 70. The AAP won all the rest.

"This is a win for Mother India," a grinning Mr Kejriwal told his supporters at the AAP office earlier in the day. He waved and blew them kisses, and said he "loved the people of Delhi".

BJP May Reach Out To Regional Parties To Stem Tie-Ups

The Aam Aadmi Party’s sweeping victory in the Delhi Assembly elections on Tuesday has made BJP sit up and weigh the possibility of regional parties coming together under AAP president Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership. Precisely to counter this, the ruling party at the Centre seems to have set out to woo regional outfits just hours after the poll outcome. Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to meet YSR Congress president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday for nearly two hours; the PM had denied the latter time twice in the recent past. This development also comes amid rumours that the saffron brigade is looking to reach out to YSRCP in Andhra and DMK in Tamil Nadu to support the BJP government, especially in the Rajya Sabha. Political observers describe it as a win-win for both BJP and YSRCP that are in need of short- and long term political favours. BJP is in need of support of regional parties to several key Bills in the Rajya Sabha, while YSRCP is seeking the Centre’s endorsement for the abolition of Legislative Council dominated by the opposition Telugu Desam Party and decentralisation of administration by having three capital cities. Analyst Kandula Ramesh views that Jagan will be able to get a much more involved meeting with Modi now in the light of BJP’s Delhi debacle. “YSRCP is going to increase its strength (in Rajya Sabha) in the coming months and BJP needs its support. At a time when BJP is finding itself in self-defence mode losing state after state, YSRCP coming forward to provide support is politically valuable,” he said. “Jagan also needs support from the Centre over the three-capital issue as well as for the abolition of Legislative Council.”
