SRINAGAR: Three of the five civilians held hostage by Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists inside a mosque at Palnoo in south Kashmir district of Kulgam managed to escape on Monday. They escaped after negotiations between the village elders and police with the terrorists failed.
"The trio escaped after jumping the wall of the rear side of the shrine," a senior police officer told TOI. The police said local officials were engaged in negotiations with the holed up terrorists. "The relatives of the terrorists were informed, however, they declined to meet them. The police also offered food to the holed up persons but terrorists did not accept it," he said.
The terrorists are holed up inside the mosque since Sunday afternoon, after army jawans launched a search operation in the village, a defence spokesman said. "We are making efforts to secure the remaining two hostages," he said, adding, "Two persons, including a jawan, were injured when terrorists opened fire from inside the mosque on Sunday."
