Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, who was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai early on Monday, is battling a serious infection of the lung. Doctors told TOI that the 90-year-old was “critical” and “on ventilator”. She was rushed to hospital around 1.30 am after she complained of breathlessness. Later in the day, she was shifted to the ICU and had to be put on life-support, sources said. “She is suffering from pneumonia along with left ventricular failure. She continues to be critical, but there has been some improvement in her condition over the last few hours,” said internal medicine physician, Dr Pratit Samdani.

Doctors said that the left ventricle supplies most of the heart pumping power and is essential for normal functioning. “In this condition, the left side of the heart has to work harder to pump the same amount of blood,” said a doctor. Breach Candy Hospital authorities declined to elaborate on her condition citing patient confidentiality. Mangeshkar’s family maintained that her condition was stable and she was on the road to recovery. Her sister Usha said the singer should be discharged soon.

Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to a hospital early Monday morning after she complained of severe chest ache.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar’s spokesperson has requested everyone to not pay any heed to the rumours as she is getting better. The spokesperson, in a statement, said, “Lata didi is stable and getting better. Request to please do not heed to needless rumours and react. Let us all collectively pray for her long life instead.”

Lata Mangeshkar was diagnosed with pneumonia and a chest infection, hospital insiders told PTI. "She is showing some signs of improvement but it will take time for her to recover. She has pneumonia and chest infection. Any person suffering from it takes time to recover from it," said the Breach Candy source.

Lata Mangeshkar, who is popularly known as the 'Nightingale of India,' has sung in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and other regional languages. During her illustrious career as one of the renowned musicians of India, she has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award as well as several National and Filmfare Awards.
