    1959 - Buddy Holly Plane Crash

    1986 : The Pope meets Mother Teresa, and visited her refuge for the sick and dying. Her Missionaries of Charity order now has 4,500 sisters in 133 countries providing food and shelter and hospices for the dying.

    1927 : President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill on this day that created the Federal Radio Commission. This is the organization that issues licenses in the present day for people to broadcast over the radio.

    1933 : Nine women fled back to their rooms during the time that a fire was taking place in a mental hospital. As a result, they had died, despite efforts of workers to help them out of the building.

    1937 : President Roosevelt had presented a request to Congress for almost three billion dollars ($2,750,000,000) money for flood control improvements. This money was to be spent on improving dikes and levee systems in areas such as the Ohio River and lower Mississippi River.

    1995 : An “alien” is someone who is not a citizen of a country in this case, not a citizen of the U.S. Aliens-expected as early as 1959 to register with the post office upon their arrival in this country. The instructions for doing so were given in a newspaper article printed on this day.

    2014 : Russia warned leaders of the Ukrainian anti-government protesters against continuing their protests. The Russian Foreign Ministry made a statement about their concerns over the situation in Ukraine and encourage opposition leaders to negotiate with the government.

      1922: Lincoln purchased the Ford Company for $8 million dollars on this day. During the time of this transition, Henry Ford had assumed the position of president of Lincoln.
      1932: The first Winter Olympics to be held in the United States. These games took place in Lake Placid, New York.
      1938: The animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released and had major success in the box-office, making more money than any other motion picture up till that point. Find More What happened in 1938
      1943: Ransom Eli Olds, the creator of one of the first internal combustion engine designs, received his last patent on this day. Olds was noted for creating the first automobile production line, through a company that has made cars such as the Olds Runabout.
      1948: Ceylon now Sri Lanka gains independence from British rule and becomes an independent dominion within the British Commonwealth.
      1950: On this day a British Atomic scientist was arrested and charge of gathering information that would be useful to enemy forces. He was the holder of some of the most classified (top secret) information regarding the A-bomb. He was found out by American FBI agents, and these agents reported the info to the Scotland Yard.
      1957: This was the first day of the sale of Smith-Corona portable typewriters. This company had been producing typewriters since 1886 when it created the first upper and lower-case typing model.
      1959: Today was the first day of the invention of the Barbie Doll. This doll was created by Ruth Handler.
      1964: As of this date, it was no longer legal to charge a poll tax for voting. This action was repealed upon the passing of the 24th Amendment.
      1968: The continued persecution of Asians in Kenya is forcing many thousands to leave the country and many are choosing Britain for their future. Kenya has introduced new tough immigration laws which only allow work permits to Kenyan Citizens.
      1969: The Palestine Liberation Organization was founded on this day. It was an organization that was established to represent the Palestinian people while Yasir Arafat was in office.
      1974: Newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst is kidnapped in Berkeley, California by the Symbionese Liberation Army.
      1976 : In Guatemala and Honduras a 7.5 magnitude earthquake centred about 160 km northeast of Guatemala City kills more than 22,000.
      1997: A civil jury panel in Santa Monica, California had determined that O.J. Simpson was guilty of the deaths of both his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. He had originally been acquitted in the year 1995
      1998: An earthquake in northern Afghanistan has left up to 4000 dead, and tens of thousands more injured or 4th homeless.
      2003: Lawmakers formally dissolve Yugoslavia and replace it with a loose union of Serbia and Montenegro.
      2004: The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declared that same-sex marriage is legal.
      2004: Facebook, a mainstream online social network is founded by Mark Zuckerberg.
      2006 - Danish and Norwegian Embassies Destroyed in Syria
      2007 - U.S. Generals Against Military Strike on Iran
      2008: China has been hit by the worst snowstorms in 50 years and some of the worst affected are the poorest in China. The Chinese rural population of farmers do not have the high tech farm machinery needed to weather these type of conditions and are living very close to poverty so when a natural disaster occurs like this which ruins the crops many are forced into near starvation.

      2009: The new African Union (A.U.) chairman, Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, has said that multi-party democracy in Africa always leads to bloodshed. He was speaking at the A.U. summit in Ethiopia, where he went on to explain that Africa was essentially tribal environment and that political parties themselves became trivialised, which led to further bloodshed. He concluded that the best model for Africa was his own country, where opposition parties are not allowed.

        1922 - Readers Digest First Published
        1931: Sir Malcolm Campbell set a new land speed record on Daytona Beach of 245 MPH with his racing machine Bluebird beating the previous record of 231 MPH by 14 MPH. The new record now stands at 245 MPH.
        1937: A bill proposing to increase tax exemption for homesteads from $2,000 to $3,500 was passed on this day. It received an initial House vote 47 to 45 vote in favour of the bill. It was expected to soon be reviewed by the Senate as of this date as well.
        1952: The first "Don't Walk" sign was installed in New York City.

        1983: Klaus Barbie, 69, Known as the ( Butcher of Lyon ) who was chief of the Gestapo in Lyon, France, during Nazi occupation, was flown to France today where he was indicted for crimes against humanity.

        2009 - China Tells Canada to Refuse Prisoners
        2011: Anti-Government protests erupt in the Serbian capital as over 50,000 people gather at a rally. The protesters called for an early election in the wake of a weak economy and the perceived ineffectiveness of a coalition government made up of ten parties that had been in power since 2008.
        2012: The imprisoned ex-leader of Panama, Manuel Noriega, was taken from prison to a hospital after authorities thought he may have suffered a stroke. Doctors indicated that their tests did not show evidence of a stroke.
        2013: Singer of the classic sixties rock band the Troggs, Reg Presley, died at the age of seventy-one. Presley had retired from music a year earlier after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

            1922 - Radio Installed In White House, President Warren G. Harding has a radio installed in the White House signalling it's increased use, acceptance in America.
            1924: Lethal gas was used at the Nevada State Prison today as a form of Execution for the first time in the United States on Convicted murderer Gee Jon.
            1937 - Judicial Reform, Members of Congress that were opposed to FDR current judicial reform program proposal pushed for a separate bill to be voted upon.
            1943 - World War II Guadalcanal, Japanese troops evacuate Guadalcanal, leaving the island in American possession after a long and bloody battle for control of the Island.

            2012 - Prince Harry has qualified as an Apache helicopter pilot after training for eighteen months in both the United Kingdom and the United States. The Prince also received an award for best co-pilot gunner at his training base and enjoys a limited combat-ready status with twenty other graduates of the program.
            2013 - A former Canadian naval intelligence officer was jailed for twenty years. Jeffrey Delisle pleads guilty to selling Nato information to Russia. Delisle was also fined a large amount of money.
            2014 - McDonald's has opened its first restaurant in the communist country of Vietnam. The location opened in the country's city of Ho Chi Minh. Many observers saw some level of irony in such an American capitalist symbol as the food chain in such a tightly controlled communist country. The restaurant was set to be run by the son-in-law of Vietnam's prime minister.

              • 2019 Pulwama attack

                On 14 February 2019, a convoy of vehicles carrying security personnel on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway was attacked by a vehicle-borne suicide bomber at Lethpora (near Awantipora) in the Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The attack resulted in the deaths of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)[a] personnel and the attacker.
