Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated in Kerala, India. It is also the state festival of Kerala with State holidays on 4 days starting from Onam Eve to the 3rd Onam Day. Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala, India. This is a special feast lunch on that day served on banana leaf traditionally. There will be usually rice and more than 10 side dishes and a sweet at the end. This festival is celebrated t welcome the king mahabali, whose spirit said to visit Kerela at time of Onam. In this festival people wear traditional clothes. 'Pookalam’ it is a type of flower rangoli made by people in front of their house. Young member take blessing and gifts from elder members. Carnivals of elephants, fireworks, boat races, music and the famous Kathakalli dance are traditionally associated with this festival. The state government of Kerala conducts Tourism Week celebrations in connection with Onam, showcasing Kerala's beauty and culture. This year Onam is celebrated on August 28, 2015

Happy Onam to everyone. I have some South Indian friends where this is specially celebrated with lot of fevor. They dress up in traditional attire and I love their white saris with golden border and such wonderful food know as sadhya. Wish we could get some of it here.IndiaBook Sr Editor and Reviewer
