  • World gets a first glimpse of Tendulkar

The Indian team returned home from the tour of the West Indies in 1989 beaten black and blue. In the ODIs they were thrashed 5-0, while they lost the Test series 3-0. With the tour of Pakistan coming up next in November later that year, the team management was under immense pressure.

While the senior team was grappling with its problems, a teenager was making waves in the domestic circuit. This baby-faced batsman had made his debut for the Bombay (now Mumbai) Ranji team, aged 14, in November 1987 and scored a maiden ton. He followed this with a string of impressive performances and thrilled everyone with his prodigious talent. Encouraged by his exploits, the selectors took him to Pakistan where the fearsome pace trio of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis was lying in wait.

The first Test of the series commenced from November 15 at the National Stadium, Karachi. The Indian team led by Kris Srikkanth won the toss and opted to field. Pakistan posted 409 in their first innings thanks to a century by their captain Imran Khan and fifties from Javed Miandad and Shoaib Mohammad. The track suited the fast bowlers. Imran, Wasim and Waqar exploited it to the hilt. They reduced the Indian team to 41 for 4 with debutant Waqar giving a good account of himself.
