  • More than 50 killed by Indian northeastern separatist rebels

By WASBIR HUSSAIN, Associated Press Writer Sat Jan 6, 12:32 PM ET

GAUHATI, India - A second day of bloodshed in India's restive northeast took at least 21 lives Saturday, including 13 migrant workers shot while they slept and eight government employees killed by a land mine explosion.

On Friday, a series of attacks by suspected separatist rebels killed 35 other migrants and wounded at least 19 in Assam state's tea-growing districts of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, officials said.

The attacks were the worst violence in the region in years and widely seen as an attempt by the insurgents to boost waning support among the impoverished area's indigenous peoples and to force the government to resume peace talks.

Most of the casualties over the two days were poor, Hindi-speaking migrant workers, R.N. Mathur, police chief for Assam, told the Associated Press.

Migrants are frequently attacked by rebels of the United Liberation Front of Asom in an effort to draw national attention to their demands for independence for ethnic Assamese. At least 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have died since the rebellion began in 1979.

The latest violence appeared to have done that. The federal Home Ministry called a high level meeting in New Delhi, the capital, on Saturday, and the country's junior home minister, Sriprakash Jaiswal, planned to visit Assam on Sunday.

But officials insisted the government would not be forced back to the negotiating table.

The deadliest incident was the slaying of 13 workers while they slept before dawn Saturday in Sadiya, a town 370 miles east of Assam's capital, Gauhati, local administrative officer Absar Hazarika said.

Mathur said the 35 workers killed Friday died in a series of attacks in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh. Those districts remain insurgent strongholds despite a decrease in popular support for the rebels the last few years as violence killed locals and migrants alike.

Also on Saturday, a land mine killed five policemen and three government officials returning from supervising a local election in Assam's Karbi Anglong district. Police did not immediately lay blame for the attack.

A bomb also exploded on an express train running from New Delhi to Dibrugarh without causing any injuries, but officials said they were not sure if rebels were involved.

The United Liberation Front of Asom did not claim responsibility for any of the attacks, but rebel leaders don't usually comment on such incidents.

The group has stepped up violence since India's government called off a six-week truce in September and resumed military offensives. A second group, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, is fighting for autonomy for ethnic Bodo, a tiny minority in Assam's 26 million people.

India's entire northeast is very poor with widespread unemployment, and bitterness toward the central government has spawned dozens of extremist groups in Assam and the region's six other states.

The militants say the central government in New Delhi, 1,000 miles to the west, exploits the northeast's natural resources while doing little for its indigenous peoples, most of whom are ethnically closer to Burma and China than to the rest of India.

The violence is an attempt "to cash in on the popular anti-outsider feeling among the masses who are agitated over the fact that up to two million people in Assam are without jobs," said Ajai Sahni, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi.

Despite the high unemployment, many Assamese prefer their traditional lifestyle as small farmers rather than working in many of the menial jobs performed by migrants — making bricks and laboring in factories and mines.

The attacks come as Assam prepares to host next month's National Games, India's biggest sporting event. The United Liberation Front has urged spectators and competitors to boycott the games, but authorities insist they will not let the event be disrupted.

    Massive anti-China march in Taiwan

China is a violent country. We want nothing to do with it," said protester Wu Chao-hsiung, a carpenter from Taipei. "We have to insist on the freedom to determine our own fate."

China's annual session of parliament passed the anti-secession law on March 14. Beijing has claimed Taiwan as its own since their split at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

Thousands of tour buses from all over the island arrived in Taipei filled with protesters, who assembled in 10 different areas -- each route representing one of the articles of the anti-secession law.

The marchers then converged on the wide boulevard in front of the president's office. Police estimated the crowd at about a million, The Associated Press reported. Taiwan's population is 23 million.

President Chen Shui-bian, a fierce longtime critic of Beijing's Communist leadership, appeared at an intersection along one of the protest routes and waved at bystanders.

As he promised, Chen didn't speak at the rally, but he mounted a stage and chanted slogans with the crowds, AP reported. He closed off the event by singing a song -- "Taiwan is our baby."

China's state-run China Daily said on Friday the march could raise tensions and set back bilateral ties, and cautioned against talk and acts by Chen at the rally. (Full story)

Some analysts see the law -- which codified Beijing's longstanding threat to attack Taiwan -- as a bid by Beijing to deter Chen from pushing for a formal split from China before the end of his term in 2008.

Former President Lee Teng-hui, 82, who has become a vocal supporter of independence since retiring in 2000, also marched in the protest. Vice President Annette Lu also made a brief appearance.

"What do we want from China? Peace," lawmaker Bi-Khim Hsiao led the crowd in chanting.

Hsiao said there is no real expectation Beijing will reconsider the law. The protest is aimed more at bringing greater international pressure on China to negotiate peacefully.

"(The law) essentially gives China a blank check to use force against Taiwan, and they are the ones legislating, they are the ones interpreting the law, and executing and implementing the law," Hsiao told CNN on Saturday.

Organizers billed the protest as a "peace carnival." A woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty waved her torch at the crowds, while a five-story-high white balloon representing peace was erected at the protest site.

An equally tall model of a red sea urchin -- its needles said to symbolize the missiles China is pointing at Taiwan -- was deflated at the end of the rally. Protesters climbed over it and tried to tear it apart.

Protesters chanted "Oppose War, Love Taiwan" and carried signs reading "Shame on China" and "Democracy."

U.S. and Japanese flags flew below a green protest banner, while demonstrators erected large paper board with the faces of U.S. President George W. Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi

Many Taiwanese see those two countries as the island's most likely allies in any military conflict with China.

The United States has pledged to defend Taiwan in the event of an attack. Washington said the legislation could set back cross-Strait relations and called its passage "unfortunate."

China's tougher stance on Taiwan has also made Europe wary about lifting an arms embargo, an anticipated move that now appears will be delayed. (Full story)

"The anti-secession law, simply put, is a law that authorizes war," 70-year-old businessman Fan Wen-yi said. "If they really see Taiwan people as their compatriots, why do they enact such a law?"

Vivian Wang, a 38-year-old restaurant worker, traveled about 300 km (190 miles) by bus from the southern city of Kaohsiung to join the protest.

"Taiwan is only a small island, so we must speak out really loud to make the world hear that we are a democracy facing an evil giant," Wang said.

Leaders from the Nationalist Party -- which opposes independence and wants to improve relations with China -- stayed away from the protest.

Protest supporters also staged demonstrations in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Brussels, Belgium.

the indian northeast state, Assam, is a mogoloid land. it was forced into india by the british. the native people dislike indian, they killed the hindu migrants. india can hardly maintain her control over this area. please give the Assam people their independence. otherwise your guys will be killed more.

the neighbouring "arunachel" state is also a mongoloid land, belonging to china's tibet. india stole it from china after her shameful defeat in 1962. india should return these states to their owners, the chinese and native people of Assam, otherwise wait to suffer more. china will not let her grisp loose on the rope around india's neck, hehe...

china can try as much as it wants, the terrorists that they support in NE are not good enough. they are coward like chinese communist government who kills civilians.

india has nothing to be scared of such cowardly enemies. a enemy that still had given hongkong and macau as colonies to foreign governments till 1990, and that doesn't have the guts to take taiwan- a small island.
what will this cowardly enemy dare to do to india. they realise that the price will be too high, thats why hu jintao came and went back just with a business deal, not even mentioning arunachal

of course behind the backs, he will keep supporting terrorists killing innocent people in NE but what else can be expected of an inhuman government that massacres its innocent citizens in its capital city.

when china will have b***s big enough to make a direct attack instead of this eunuch like support to terrorists, we will see. as of now india doesn't give any care to such rogue countries like pakistan and china.

we have a saying- those who dig ditch for others fall in those ditches themselves.

that happened for pakistan after 9/11 and indian benefited with entry into the nuclear club. history repeats itself

obviously a mule is not expected to know history or mathematics
india struggled and won its independence in 1947, while hong kong still was a colony till 1992- the record for the colonial rule in asia...even small countries like vietnam, sri lanka fought and got their freedom by 1950s.
what a shame for the great nation china that din't have the balls to take back hong kong from UK till 1992 when the illegal lease expired...

as i told u, u guys don't have the b***s to do anything but make tall claims. as for independence in 1999 for macau, ur mule brain doesn't understand so let me explain.

even today hongkong and macau are not like other parts of china. they are
A Special administrative region (SAR). now go and read what they mean.

"Currently, the two SARs of Hong Kong and Macau are responsible for all issues except acts of state like diplomatic relations and national defence: consequently, they have their own judiciaries and courts of final appeal, their own legislature, immigration policies, currencies and extradition processes. The pre-existing legal systems, namely common law in Hong Kong and Portuguese law in Macau, are preserved except consequential to establishment of courts of final appeal.

With listed exceptions, national laws applying in the mainland do not apply in a SAR. These listed exceptions must involve diplomacy, national defence or something beyond the scope of the SAR's autonomy."

do u know why? coz the british and portuguese are still twisting ur arm showing carrot in one hand and stick in another and ur dancing to their tunes.
india was colonised physcially but u are colonised mentally. after the opium wars u are not able to stand up and say no to the colonial powers even in 21st century.
shame shame for the great country!

don't argue with this idiot india89, i invite the chinese to take back assam and arunachal

don't worry they will never be able because they don't have the balls. that's why just like pakistan they give indirect support to terrorism. but just as pakistan achieves nothing by that, ULFA the pet dog of china is on the run in Assam now. Its a desperate act by ULFA to kill civilians because the indian army has killed all its top leaders.

as for china, a country that doesn't have the balls to take back taiwan by force, what will it have the balls to attack another country...hahaha...

it can only attack countries like tibet with no armies...thats all the chinese PLA has guts for now. no one in india gives a damn about china.
