Thackeray Especially went from Mumbai to Pune to receive and welcome Modi as a state protocol gesture, and the two were together for barely a few minutes. Modi shook hands warmly with Thackeray who bowed and welcomed him. Over a week after he took over as the chief minister, Thackeray has not yet formally met the Prime Minister, though a meeting is likely to be announced shortly. Modi, along with Shah, arrived in Pune for the three-day national conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of police being held at the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) here. The Modi-Thackeray meet is expected to have a positive bearing on the relations between the two in the coming months, particularly since the new state government has initiated some steps that have upset the Opposition BJP.

Landmark day for India, says PM Modi

Having ticked yet another box on its “core” agenda with the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, BJP looks set to launch a public campaign to celebrate the decision to confer citizenship on refugees belonging to religious minorities from the neighboring Islamic countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The stage for what may turn out to be a big “awareness” program was set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who asked BJP MPs to launch a campaign to explain the “historic” decision to people and expose the opposition for repeating Pakistan’s language on the issue. Addressing a BJP parliamentary party meeting before Rajya Sabha cleared the controversial legislation, Modi said the proposed law will be recorded in “golden letters”. Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi quoted Modi as saying that the bill would end the uncertainty that refugees belonging to minority communities had to endure. Modi, according to Joshi, accused the opposition of endorsing Pakistan’s attack on CAB. Pakistani PM had on Tuesday called the legislation a product of RSS’s “expansionist Hindu Rashtra vision” and Modi government’s fascist agenda.

Have Trust in Modi: PM to Northeast

PM Narendra Modi on Thursday devoted much of his speech at a Jharkhand election rally to allaying fears of northeastern states, especially Assam, regarding the Citizenship Amendment Bill. “I want to assure every state, every tribal society in the northeast and the eastern part of the country, including Assam, that preserving their culture is our priority,” Modi said in Dhanbad. “Today, I appeal to my brothers and sisters of Assam to have faith in Modi. No harm will come to them and their tradition, culture, and way of living.” “Confusion is being created over CAB by Congress and its allies. I appeal the people of northeast not to get influenced by these people,” he said. “Congress has lost faith in tribals, Dalits… They are now depending on the votes of only one community and lying on CAB.”
