    ATTENTION CEOs OF IT COMPANIES: AZIM PREMJI, NARAYAN MURTHY, ETC

    Why do Call Centers and other BPO services not hire older people? Most IT companies like to boast that their employees are very young, averaging 25. This, they imagine is some kind of achievement. I think this kind of mindset is prejudiced and causes great harm to millions of older people.

    There are several million educated men and women in the age group of 40 to 60 who are physically fit and mentally agile to compete for such jobs. This hapless generation was denied lucrative employment during their prime years because of lack of opportunity, in our erstwhile closed economy. They were forced by circumstances to survive on underpaid jobs. Now, when there is so much opportunity going around, again they are neglected and discriminated because of their age. In reality, these older people are quite capable of performing tasks using a computer, just as well, if not better than most younger workers.

    Why should we not give them another chance at life? Many people in this category will be gladly willing to undergo training or 're-training'. Even psychologists and medical doctors would agree that it is important for people to be employed in productive activity in order to stay healthy. A 'mind-lift' is considered better than a 'face-lift' to stay young! Perhaps an Infosys or a Wipro should come forward to set an example by taking the intiative.
